Fibromyalgia is a syndrome characterized by chronic widespread pain at multiple tender points, joint stiffness, and systemic symptoms (e.g., mood disorders, fatigue, cognitive dysfunction, and insomnia) without a well-defined underlying organic disease. Nevertheless, it can be associated with specific diseases such as rheumatic pathologies, psychiatric or neurological disorders, infections, and diabetes.

This mysterious condition affects many people in North American society. One physician, a Daniel J. Clauw, MD estimated that number to be 2%-8% based on analysis of historical records in the U.S.A. 1

I estimate that 20%-30% of the people who seek support from our association list Fibromyalgia as the condition they are stricken by or as a symptom of their illness. These numbers are extreme. This prevalence could suggest commonalities that can be used to create a compilation of life experiences. We can use those experiences to support people who are living with FM.
In 2011, I was a part of a small collective that was able to administer a nutritional therapy to a group of 30 people for 18 months. Unfortunately, I am not able to share the details of our efforts due to laws concerning health claims. I will say that a number of people involved expressed a reduction or resolution of symptoms they associated with Fibromyalgia. Other institutions have expressed similar conclusions 2 3 4.

I recently received an email from a new member. I have published portions of it, with permission, to demonstrate the severity of this syndrome:

Hello My Name is Crystal Elk AKA Michelle Fields

I Suffer from Fibromyalgia along with all those other illnesses that accompany it! Sleep disorder, Life long depression, IBS severe. My back is messed up, degenerative disc disease, had a very bad car accident when I was 16 yrs old. 4 months in the hospital and my back has just gotten to the point I can’t stand or walk for more than 5 minutes….  I’m only 54 but I feel on deaths door, no quality of life what so ever, I need to do something in order to go on!

I can’t do basics without extreme pain, can’t dress myself barely, make my bed, do laundry, cook or clean for myself, go to anywhere for fear of my bowels not holding, pure exhaustion! Not eating properly!

I was a Model by age 12, Singing and dancing my whole life, Acting periodically and Have my Masters in music, which I  accomplished in my late 30’s early 40’s! I didn’t have a plan B!…. So now I’m working on that with what little I have!

I want a better life, one where I can be a productive member of the community, do volunteering etc! Live without pain, be healthier!
I apologize if this is just TMI?¿?¿

Most Sincerely Crystal Elk

I am tired of reading emails like these. Action must be taken.

N.W.A. is looking for 5 Canadians who are living with fibromyalgia to participate in a special program that will utilize our health services network to better their lives. I expect this program to begin February of 2016 and run for 3 months. We will evaluate our progress at the end of the term and make logical decisions on how to proceed based on results.

We are interested in working with people who are serious about improving their health and are prepared to make significant changes to their lifestyle in order to reach that goal. Special funding opportunities will be created once the group has been established. Funding for this program will be made available for people with low or no income. If you have a modest income you may be considered for a partial subsidy based on your economic situation. If you have the funds required to pursue the program you participate at the discounted rates offered by our health professionals.

If this program is of interest to you please send an email to Eric Halstrom at Please express your situation and what your interest you have in the program and I will get back to you.
